Project:
Mesozoic Meadow

Mesozoic Meadow is a tycoon & pet simulation game where there’s always something to do! You can perfect your personal collection of your favorite dinosaurs, or maybe you want to work on finances and become an economic powerhouse, or maybe you want to try to do both at the same time! The choice is yours.

The game was a year-long Senior Capstone project from 2022 that was finished with Beta playtesting. The project planning was focused around utilizing sprint planning and creating user stories to meet self-imposed deadlines and goals. The game has been in development for four 3-week long scrums.

User stories are used during project planning to prioritize what needs to be added to the game.

Mesozoic Meadow’s idea came from a prevalent problem that I faced when playing one of my favorite genres of games: business simulation games often have problematic time gates that either hinder or completely halt the gameplay experience. These roadblocks ranged from timers on when an activity can be played again to borderline curt paywalls that interrupt a player’s actions. I wanted to make a game that presented the idea of a tycoon that did not pause itself in order to incentivise the player to other (and often less enjoyable) areas of gameplay. The solution is to create a game that allows uninterrupted focus into certain areas of the game, where the player can choose where they want to focus. In Mesozoic Meadow, this is done with two systems, one that focuses on raising your dinosaurs’ happiness and another that focuses on gaining in-game currency. This idea was presented at the game’s pitch in front of the RnHS senior class with information about its concepts, inspirations, and mission statement.

Mesozoic Meadow is a project that plans to achieve a blend of the tycoon game genre and artificial pets genre to create an action-filled experience.

In collaboration with RnHS artists MJ White and Miles Wenger, the game features lighthearted visuals that help guide the player through fun activities to grow their dinosaur collection. The game presents a cartoonish twist on traditional dinosaur interpretations that have a large emphasis on unique characters and the use of shapes to convey personality in design.
