Vera is a short adventure game that focuses around two roommates living in a traditional fantasy setting. With the support of her friend Kat, the main character Vera travels around town doing tasks to solve the townspeople’s problems, ranging from cleaning trash off of the beach to playing fetch with a dragon.
I worked on Vera during Girls Make Game’s 3-week game development camp, where I collaborated with Dylan & Gracie Clauson in our team Banjo Frogs. My work on the project was the original concept, narrative writing, and extra art assets. The final product was a presentation and showcase of the game that was held at Nintendo of America in Redmond.
The game had elements of a visual novel, such as how the dialogue was displayed. However, instead of having a linear plot where the player was taken from place to place, the player could move around using a map menu and arrows that were in various places around the screen, much like a point-and-click adventure game. This let the player interact with the different storylines within the town in any order they chose and at their own pace.
The game was a simplistic project filled with passion and motivation. Vera helped me learn about the design process when in collaboration with others, and was my greatest experience of working with a team to create a game.
